Dr. Gustavo Avila-Ortiz obtained a DDS degree and completed a PhD training program at the University of Granada (Spain), before moving to Ann Arbor, Michigan (USA) where he graduated with an MS degree and a Certificate in Periodontics from the University of Michigan. He is also a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology. Dr. Avila-Ortiz has over 10 years of experience as an educator and has worked to advance the profession in numerous institutional committees and scientific organizations. He is a former faculty member at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry and at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry, where he was the Phillip A. Lainson Professor and Chair of the Department of Periodontics until 2022. He currently serves as Editor-in-Chief of The International Journal of Periodontics & Restorative Dentistry. He has authored more than 100 articles published in peer-reviewed journals and numerous book chapters. He is the co-author of the book TISSUES: Critical Issue in Periodontics and Implant-Related Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (Quintessence Publishing 2022), which has been critically acclaimed within the profession. Dr. Avila-Ortiz is currently a Visiting Professor in the Division of Periodontics at Harvard School of Dental Medicine and a member of Atelier Dental Madrid (Spain), a center for dental excellence where he maintains a private practice limited to Periodontics and Implant Dentistry and is regularly engaged in scholarly and continuing-education activities.
Vincent Fehmer, MDT, received his dental technical education and degree in Stuttgart, Germany, before completing fellowships in Great Britain and the United States in Oral Design–certified dental technical laboratories. After working several years in such a laboratory in Berlin, he received his MDT degree and became the chief dental technician at the Clinic for Fixed and Removable Prosthodontics in Zurich, Switzerland. Since 2015, he has been a dental technician at the Clinic for Fixed Prosthodontics and Biomaterials in Geneva, Switzerland. He also runs his own laboratory in Lausanne. Mr Fehmer is a Fellow of the International Team for Implantology, an active member of the European Academy of Esthetic Dentistry (EAED), and a member of the Oral Design group as well as the European Association of Dental Technology (EADT) and the German Society of Esthetic Dentistry (DGÄZ). He is a sought-after international speaker and has received many honors for his work, including the Kenneth Rudd Award from the American Prosthodontic Society. He has published more than 50 articles in peer-reviewed journals within the field of fixed prosthodontics and digital dental technology, contributed to many books, and recently coauthored the book Fixed Restorations: A Clinical Guide to the Selection of Materials and Fabrication Technology with Irena Sailer and Bjarni Pjetursson. Mr Fehmer also serves as Editor-in-Chief for the International Journal of Esthetic Dentistry, Section Editor for the International Journal of Prosthodontics, and co-chair for the 26thInternational Symposium on Ceramics (June 2023).
Koray is recognised by his peers as someone who has been at the forefront of high end dentistry for many years. He is known for his thoughtful, knowledgeable and uncompromising multidisciplinary approach to patients requiring complex restorative dental care. His diagnostic and treatment planning process and treatment sequencing is known in the profession as being comprehensive and with rare attention to detail. Patients who have had long standing and very advanced dental problems find in Koray someone who is able to comprehensively and systematically address all of their requirements for efficient and quality documented dental care that will stand the test of time. Koray qualified in 1989 from Guy’s Dental Hospital, winning the Final Year Prize for overall excellence and the S.J. Kaye Prize in Oral Medicine and Pathology. He remained at Guy’s for two separate House Surgeon appointments in Prosthetic Dentistry and Oral and Maxillofacial surgery until 1991 when he went into general practice in North London. Between 1991 and 1993 he completed the Master of Science degree in Periodontology from Guy’s Hospital and at the end of 1993 passed examinations to obtain a Restorative Dentistry Fellowship in Dental Surgery from the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
He has since been in practice dedicated to quality dental care, having a special interest in multi-disciplinary cases that require detailed planning and co-ordination of several specialist branches of dentistry. Between 1996 and 1999 he provided surgical services in periodontics and implant dentistry to three prestigious practices in the Knightsbridge and South Kensington areas, and established his own practice in the West End of London in 1998. In 2005 he founded The London Centre for Implant and Aesthetic Dentistry (LCIAD Ltd.) in Wimpole Street at the heart of London’s dental and medical community. He expanded LCIAD in October 2010 into new larger premises to establish a strong clinical team with in-depth experience in the management and care of patients with complex dental problems.
Koray has undergone and continues to undergo extensive postgraduate education in several countries with world leaders in many fields of dentistry and dental technology as well as being a sought-after lecturer in his own right.
Fazeela leads the Face team and is the Principal at the Harley Street Clinic with a special interest in full mouth rehabilitation, both on the surgical and restorative side. She is also a lead tutor on the implant diploma at The Royal College of Surgeons. She lectures on Implant Dentistry worldwide, writes for several journals and holds positions on several editorial boards. Fazeela qualified from the Royal London in 1994, after which she continued her training in Oral Surgery before completing her Masters degree in Restorative Dentistry with Distinction. She is a fellow of the International Congress of Oral Implantology and is a tutor on the Diploma of Implant Dentistry at The Royal College of Surgeons of England. She is also a member of the Association of Dental Implantology and the British Association of Aesthetic Dentistry.
Doctor Stefen Koubi graduated from the University of Marseille, France, in 1998. He has held the position of Associate Professor in the Restorative Department of Marseille University since 2008 and received his PhD in 2011. He maintains a private practice in Marseille and in Paris. His main areas of interest are esthetic rehabilitation for cosmetic or functional reasons (worn dentition). He has been invited to many prestigious esthetic academies to lecture on simple ways to achieve high-quality esthetic dentistry. He is an invited professor in many esthetic postgraduate programs. Dr Koubi received the Gold Molar title from the students of his university (best teacher of the year) in 2012, and the title of Best French Speaker the same year. Since 2012 he has been a member of Style Italiano community in charge of indirect topics. He founded in 2013 L'Institut de la facette, a private training center focused on smile design for worn dentition and cosmetic rehabilitations. He is the author or co-author of many scientific articles and case reports on esthetic dentistry.
Louis Mackenzie is the Head Dental Officer at Denplan. He has been a General Dental Practitioner for 30 years and is a clinical lecturer at the University of Birmingham School of dentistry and King’s College London. Louis delivers postgraduate lectures nationally and internationally on direct and indirect restorative techniques, minimally invasive dentistry and clinical photography and runs a series of popular hands-on courses. He is also a member of Dental Update’s editorial board.
Jordi Manauta was born in Mexico City, where he graduated cum laude. in dentistry from UNITEC (Universidad Tecnológica de México) and apprentice of Dr. Miguel Angel Tamés (Mexico) and Dr. Walter Devoto (Italy). He continued his postgraduate studies in Operative and Aesthetics Dentistry Master in UIC (Universitat Internacional de Catalunya) in Barcelona. He is visiting professor in the Siena and Marseille University. He has developed various materials and instruments for aesthetic dentistry and photography in collaboration with international companies. He is the author of the book Layers (quintessence 2012). Scientific consultant for two European Journals. Author and co-author of many publications in international journals, he is frequently invited as a lecturer on these topics. He is dedicated to his private practice.
Irena Sailer, Prof Dr med dent, is chair of the Division of Fixed Prosthodontics and Biomaterials at the University of Geneva and adjunct associate professor in the Department of Preventive and Restorative Sciences at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. In 2019, she received an Honorary Skou Professorship of digital dental technologies, fixed and implant prosthodontics, and biomaterials at Aarhus University, Denmark. Dr Sailer is editor-in-chief of The International Journal of Prosthodontics and coauthor of over 150 peer-reviewed publications as well as the books Fixed Restorations: A Clinical Guide to the Selection of Materials and Fabrication Technology (Quintessence, 2021) and Color in Dentistry (2017). She holds several patents on esthetic coatings of dental/medical devices and a digital dental splint.
Born in Barcelona, Spain, Anna Salat studied dentistry at Universitat Internacional de Catalunya (UIC) in Barcelona. She completed a specialization in esthetic and restorative dentistry at the same university, where she became a professor in that department. She has been visiting professor in Siena, Marseille, Valencia, Barcelona, and Lisbon. She is particularly interested in composites, esthetics, and cosmetic dentistry and teaches courses on these topics. She is the author of publications in international journals such as the International Journal of Esthetic Dentistry and the Tropical Dental Journal. Together with Dr Manauta, she wrote the book Layers: An Atlas of Composite Resin Stratification (Quintessence Publishing 2012) and is a coauthor of the book Mulher Dentista (Quintessence Publishing 2016). She is an honorary member of the Styleitaliano group. She loves to find ways to make things look better, and she applies this life philosophy by combining adhesive dentistry and conservative techniques to improve smiles.
Istvan Urban, DMD, MD, PhD, teaches implant dentistry in the graduate program at Loma Linda University in California and is also an adjunct clinical associate professor in the Department of Periodontology and Oral Medicine at the University of Michigan. He has published widely on bone regeneration and soft tissue reconstructive surgery around dental implants and is the author of the textbooks Vertical and Horizontal Ridge Augmentation: New Perspectives (Quintessence, 2017) and Vertical 2: The Next Level of Hard and Soft Tissue Augmentation (2022). Dr Urban is licensed in the state of California and maintains a private practice in Budapest, Hungary.
Dr Nik Vourakis has been practising as a dental surgeon since 2005 after graduating from the prestigious Military Academy Medical School at the University of Thessaloniki, Greece. Nikolas started his training in the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery of the 401 Military Hospital in Athens, Greece. As a military officer, he then went on to serve as a team leader in a field hospital in Kabul, Afghanistan. He went on to further training completing a Postgraduate Diploma in Oral Implantology from the University of Athens, Greece and a Master of Science Degree in Oral Surgery/Implantology from Goethe University of Frankfurt, Germany. He recently obtained an Advanced Surgical Master Curriculum in Regenerative Implant Dentistry next to Dr Istvan Urban in Budapest, Hungary. Nikolas is lecturing about Dental Implants and Regenerative Dentistry, and he is holding a program for introducing and mentoring dentists in Implant Dentistry. He is a Member of the Association of Dental Implantology and the International Team for Implantology.
Martin graduated from the University of Bristol in 1995 and has been a partner at Ten Dental, a specialist referral practice in Clapham, south London, since 2004. His focus at the practice is on implant and Aesthetic Dentistry.
He holds the position of Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Periodontics at the University of Pennsylvania. He is a lecturer in the Master in Aesthetics program at the University of Frankfurt. Martin has received the advanced-level Diploma in Implant Dentistry from the Royal College of Surgeons, England, and is also a tutor on the same program. He is a full member of the British Academy of Aesthetic Dentistry.
Martin's expertise extends to digital implant dentistry and digital smile design, and he has delivered international lectures on all aspects of implant dentistry.
