1st EAED Academy Meeting

Sam Alawie completed his Master Dental Technician degree in Brussels, Belgium in 1994. He migrated to the United States in 2003 and opened his own full service dental laboratory in Beverly Hills, California. Sam is well versed on the importance of technical clinical communications and their implementations for successful case planning and patient satisfaction. He is a keen and avid supporter and member of many study groups. He instructed various hands-on crown and bridge courses and hosted presentations throughout Europe and the United States. 

In 2012, Sam opened a state-of-the-art educational facility, Oral Design Beverly Hills which offers a spacious venue where dental professionals and students can come together to advance their knowledge, practice their craft, and exchange ideas; offering a wide range of training programs, study groups, and continuing education courses, including advanced classes with world renowned dental specialists. 

In 2020 Mr. Willi Geller of the Oral Design Foundation based in Switzerland invited Sam to be an active member of the Oral Design Family.

Trained at the university of Lyon, Dr Hadi Antoun, dental surgeon, holds a Speciality Certificate in Oral Biology and Periodontology and a postgraduate degree in Surgical and Prosthetic Implantology from the university of Paris VII. He has taught at the Implantology department of the university of Paris VII as a visiting practitioner. He is regularly invited to conferences and is involved in clinical research principally related to immediate loading and bone grafting. In addition to national and international publications, he is the author of a book on sinus grafts and has co-written a book on bone grafts.

Since its creation in 2003, he runs the Training Institute for Advanced Implant Surgery (IFCIA). Besides his research and training activities, he undertakes a private practice limited to Periodontology and Implantology.

In addition, he is expert at the Paris Court of Appeal.

Wael Att, DDS, Dr med dent, PhD, is professor and chair of the Department of Prosthodontics at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine and a professor of prosthodontics at the University of Freiburg School of Dentistry in Germany. He serves as president of the International Academy for Digital Dental Medicine, past president of the Prosthodontics Group of the International Association for Dental Research as well as president of the Arabian Academy of Esthetic Dentistry. Dr Att is a board-certified prosthodontist from the German Society of Prosthodontics and Biomaterials and an active member of multiple professional organizations, including the European Academy of Esthetic Dentistry.

Nitzan Bichacho, D.M.D. holds the post of expert in prosthodontics at the rank of Professor, at the Faculty of Dental Medicine, Hebrew University and Hadassah, Jerusalem, Israel, where he graduated in 1984. Prof. Bichacho is Past President and a Life Member of the European Academy of Esthetic Dentistry (EAED) and serves on the editorial boards of leading international dental journals. He developed restorative and prosthetic clinical techniques that have become widely used around the world. Prof. Bichacho publishes and lectures worldwide on dental implant therapy, fixed prosthodontics, interdisciplinary treatments and innovative treatment modalities in esthetic dentistry. The Bichacho Clinic in Tel Aviv focuses on high-end esthetic oriented interdisciplinary treatments, collaborating with world renowned colleagues and dental technicians.

Dr. Gonzalo Blasi graduated in dentistry from the International University of Catalonia in 2011. He worked for two years as a general dentist, always showing interest in the specialty of periodontics. That is why he applied for a position as a resident at the University of Maryland in the United States. He was accepted into the program in 2012 and started in 2013. During three years, he took the periodontics and implants program at the university specializing in the treatment of gums and implants. Including the treatment of gingivitis, periodontitis, coverage of gum retractions, implant surgeries, sinus elevations, peri-implantitis (implant infection) and bone margin increases. In the last course of residence he received the prestigious Richard Lazzara fellowship award by the American Academy of Periodontology Foundation. In 2016 he was accepted as a fellow at the Periodontal Prosthesis Implant Residency also at the University of Maryland. In this fellowship, he rehabilitated implants and teeth and also developed several research protocols.
In 2017 he returned to Barcelona and started working at Blasi Clínica Dental Barcelona leading the Periodontics and Implants department. Gonzalo also collaborates as a professor in the department of periodontics of the International University of Catalonia and the University of Maryland. He also gives lectures both nationally and internationally.

Dr. Gonzalo Blasi not only works with patients but also collaborates in various research projects to improve our treatments to patients and make them more predictable.

Dr. Renato Cocconi is an orthodontist in Parma, Italy where he works at a private clinic that he directs with Dr Raffaini. Dr Cocconi attended a 3 year Postgraduate Program in Orthodontics at the Department of Orthodontics of the University of Milan where he obtained his master’s degree in 1993. He subsequently spent 2.5 years in the United States where he worked in L.F. Andrews Foundation and attended the Roth Williams postgraduate course in from 1991-1993. Since that time Dr Cocconi has been very active in the orthodontic community nationally and internationally. His accomplishments and collaborations worldwide include working with Dr Terry Tanaka at USC, election to the Scientific Committee of the Angle Society and countless invitations to speak internationally for such groups as European Orthodontic Society, AAO, the American Academy of Esthetic Dentistry, the European Academy of Esthetic Dentistry and the World Orthodontic Meeting in London in September 2015. He has served as a clinical professor in the Department of Orthodontics of the University of Milan from 1993 to 2008. Currently, Cocconi is active in many organizations including the EOS, AAO, SIDO and the Angle Society of Europe. He will be part of the European Team (with Mauro Fradeani and Mirco Raffaini) selected for the Meeting "USA meets Europe" that takes place in Tegernsee Germany every 4 years, organized by the Seattle Study Group, DGAZ and AIOP.

Vincent Fehmer, MDT, received his dental technical education and degree in Stuttgart, Germany, before completing fellowships in Great Britain and the United States in Oral Design–certified dental technical laboratories. After working several years in such a laboratory in Berlin, he received his MDT degree and became the chief dental technician at the Clinic for Fixed and Removable Prosthodontics in Zurich, Switzerland. Since 2015, he has been a dental technician at the Clinic for Fixed Prosthodontics and Biomaterials in Geneva, Switzerland. He also runs his own laboratory in Lausanne. Mr Fehmer is a Fellow of the International Team for Implantology, an active member of the European Academy of Esthetic Dentistry (EAED), and a member of the Oral Design group as well as the European Association of Dental Technology (EADT) and the German Society of Esthetic Dentistry (DGÄZ). He is a sought-after international speaker and has received many honors for his work, including the Kenneth Rudd Award from the American Prosthodontic Society. He has published more than 50 articles in peer-reviewed journals within the field of fixed prosthodontics and digital dental technology, contributed to many books, and recently coauthored the book Fixed Restorations: A Clinical Guide to the Selection of Materials and Fabrication Technology with Irena Sailer and Bjarni Pjetursson. Mr Fehmer also serves as Editor-in-Chief for the International Journal of Esthetic Dentistry, Section Editor for the International Journal of Prosthodontics, and co-chair for the 26^thInternational Symposium on Ceramics (June 2023).

Alfonso Gil is receiving a 5-year post-graduate education in Fixed and Removable Prosthodontics and Dental Material Sciences from the University of Zurich. He obtained his DDS Degree from the University of the Basque Country (2013). His Master of Science and Advanced Periodontology Implantology Certificate from the University of Southern California (USC) (2013-2016) were followed by a Certificate in Advanced Surgical Implant Dentistry from the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) (2016-2017). He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology. He obtained his PhD with highest honors from the University International of Catalunya in November 2019. His research focuses on the treatment of peri-implant disease, soft tissue augmentation of teeth and implants and fixed prosthodontics.

Dr. Gracis was trained in the United States where he obtained first a D.M.D. degree at the University of Pennsylvania, and, then, the certificate in Prosthodontics with an M.S.D. degree at the University of Washington. In 1990, he returned to Milan and has been working ever since in private practice limiting his activity to prosthodontics and restorative dentistry. He belongs as Active Member to the Italian Academy of Prosthetic Dentistry for which he was President in the years 2007–2008 and to the European Academy of Esthetic Dentistry for which he was President for the 2016–2018 term. He is on the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Esthetic Dentistry and of the International Journal of Prosthodontics.

Ueli Grunder, DMD, is a past president of the Swiss Society of Oral Implantology and the European Academy of Esthetic Dentistry. He has published numerous papers and the book Implants in the Esthetic Zone (Quintessence, 2015), which has been translated into 11 languages. He lectures extensively nationally and internationally on the surgical and prosthetic aspects of implant dentistry. Dr Grunder maintains a group private practice in Zollikon-Zürich, Switzerland.

Dr. Effie Habsha received her Bachelor of Science degree and earned her DDS degree from the University of Toronto. Upon graduation, she completed a one year General Practice Residency at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto, ON. Dr. Habsha received her Diploma in Prosthodontics and Master of Science degree, both from the University of Toronto. She is a Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada (RCDC) and is an examiner and Section Head for the Oral Examination in Prosthodontics for the RCDC. Dr. Habsha is an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the Department of Dentistry, Eastman Institute for Oral Health at the University of Rochester Medical Center. She has served as an Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto and currently instructs both at the undergraduate and graduate level in Prosthodontics at U of T. Dr. Habsha is a Professor at George Brown College of Applied Arts and Technology and is the On-staff Prosthodontist at MedCan clinic in Toronto. She holds an appointment as Staff Prosthodontist at Mount Sinai Hospital where she instructs the dental residents and is involved in various clinical research projects. Dr. Habsha is an Associate Fellow of the Academy of Prosthodontics and Greater New York Academy of Prosthodontics and a Fellow of The Pierre Fauchard Academy and holds memberships in numerous Prosthodontic organizations and societies. She lectures both nationally and internationally on various Prosthodontic topics and maintains a private practice limited to Prosthodontics and Implant Dentistry in Toronto.

Dr. Arndt Happe graduated from dental school in 1994, having studied at Westfälische Wilhelms University, Münster. Following post-graduate studies with Professor Fouad Khoury and successful specialization in oral surgery, he obtained his doctoral degree in 1996. At that time he had already been active as a speaker and co-author of national and international publications in the field of oral implantology. Since 1999, Dr. Happe has worked as an oral surgeon in private practice in Münster, with a professional focus on both oral implantology (since 2000) and periodontology (since 2004). He taught in various postgraduate programs offered by the German Association of Oral Implantology (DGI), the European Association of Dental Implantologists (BDIZ EDI), the German Association of Esthetic Dentistry (DGÄZ) and the German Society for Periodontology (DGP), as well as in the “Periodontology and Implant Therapy” master program of the DGP in cooperation with Dresden International University. In addition, Dr. Happe is an external research assistant at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Plastic Surgery, Oral Surgery and Implantology at the University of Cologne (Director: Professor Joachim E. Zöller). He is an affiliate of the prestigious European Academy of Esthetic Dentistry (EAED).

Dr. Joseph Kan completed his specialty training in Prosthodontics as well as the Master degree from the Implant Surgery from Loma Linda University School of Dentistry (LLUSD) in 1997. He is currently a Professor in the Department of Restorative Dentistry and the research coordinator for the Implant Dentistry Program in LLUSD. He also maintains a private practice limited to Prosthodontics and Implant Surgery. In 1997, Dr. Kan was the recipient of the Best Research Award in the 12^th Annual Meeting of the Academy of Osseointegration. He also received the Judson C. Hinckey Scientific Award from the Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry in 2003 and the Robert James Achievement Award in 2005. Dr. Kan is on the Periodontology/Implantology Editorial Board of the Practical Periodontics & Aesthetic Dentistry. He is a member of the American Dental Association, Academy of Osseointegration, American College of Prosthodontists, American Academy of Fixed Prosthodontics and an associate member of the Pacific Coast Society of Prosthodontists. Dr. Kan is one of few clinicians worldwide that had been trained in both the surgical and restorative discipline of implant dentistry. Besides lecturing both nationally and internationally, he has published over 40 articles in reference journals and chapters in textbooks.

Dr Mankoo’s work includes all aspects of dental implant treatments, All on 4, Implant-supported Fixed Dentures, advanced restorative dentistry, aesthetic dentistry, cosmetic dentistry, veneers, crowns and bridgework, bone and soft tissue reconstruction & grafting, plastic periodontal surgery, periodontal rehabilitation, occlusal reconstructions, perioprosthetic rehabilitation and full mouth rehabilitations.

Qualifying from the University of Bristol in 1981 and based in Windsor, Berkshire since 1994 Tidu has pursued an extensive postgraduate education and continually strives to provide truly exceptional dentistry. An active member of numerous dental organisations and a respected teacher with numerous publications, he is a sought-after speaker particularly in the field of Dental Implants, comprehensive Aesthetic Dentistry and management of complex cases. He lectures and gives courses regularly all over the world and continues to publish on a regular basis.

He was the President of the European Academy of Esthetic Dentistry (EAED) in 2009-2010, is a visiting Professor at the International University of Catalunya in Barcelona, Spain and a founder and Past President of the British Academy of Aesthetic Dentistry (BAAD). He serves on the Editorial Board of a number of dental journals. He is a respected teacher with numerous publications. He is a sought-after international speaker particularly in the field of Dental Implants, Restorative & Aesthetic Dentistry and management of complex cases. He lectures and gives courses regularly all over the world. He is an active member of the European Academy of Esthetic Dentistry, the Association of Dental Implantology (UK), the European Association of Osseointegration (EAO), Fellow of the International College of Dentists (FICD), and a fellow of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists. He has served on the Editorial Board of a number of dental journals and has published numerous articles in scientific journals and text books.

Dr. Mintrone started his activity as a dental technician and then specialized as a ceramist in fixed prosthesis. After graduating in dentistry with honors from the University of Modena, Italy, he attended several courses on prosthetic dentistry and implant surgery. Dr. Mintrone is an active member of the European Academy of Esthetic Dentistry (EAED). He is the winner of the 2011 and 2012 editions of the gIDE institute’s Master Clinician in Implant Dentistry. He has authored several articles published in international scientific magazines and lectures nationally and internationally on topics related to digital dentistry, implants and prosthodontics. In his private practise in Modena, Italy, Dr. Mintrone focuses his professional activity mainly on esthetics, prosthetic rehabilitation on implants and natural dentition.

Dr. Andrea Ricci graduates from University of Perugia in 1996.

In 1999, after a three years training program he achieved the Certificate in Advanced Prosthodontics at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. In the same university he had didactic activity.

Since 1999 he limits his practice to Prosthodontics, Periodontology and Implant Dentistry with special emphasis to the aesthetic and functional rehabilitations.

He is an Active Member of the European Academy of Esthetic Dentistry (EAED), Associate Member of the American Academy of Restorative Dentistry (AARD), Active Member of the Italian Academy of Esthetic Dentistry (IAED).

He is member to several committees in the Academy where he belongs. Co-author of several papers published in international journals.

He is founder and Scientific Director of IDEAT (Institute of Dental Education and Therapy), a teaching institute that organizes on-site and on-line training courses for dentists.

Since 2004 He has lectured extensively in Europe, United States, China, Singapore, Saudi Arabia, Brazil, United Arab Emirates and in Japan.

Since 2005 he has run courses for dentists and technicians in his office and around the world.

On January 2018, after 5 years of training, he became a Coach of the Roberto Re Leadership School, the biggest personal growth organization in Europe. On December 2019 he was voted “best coach of the year”.

Irena Sailer, Prof Dr med dent, is chair of the Division of Fixed Prosthodontics and Biomaterials at the University of Geneva and adjunct associate professor in the Department of Preventive and Restorative Sciences at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. In 2019, she received an Honorary Skou Professorship of digital dental technologies, fixed and implant prosthodontics, and biomaterials at Aarhus University, Denmark. Dr Sailer is editor-in-chief of The International Journal of Prosthodontics and coauthor of over 150 peer-reviewed publications as well as the books Fixed Restorations: A Clinical Guide to the Selection of Materials and Fabrication Technology (Quintessence, 2021) and Color in Dentistry (2017). She holds several patents on esthetic coatings of dental/medical devices and a digital dental splint.

Graduated in 1988 with a degree in dentistry from the University of Bologna, Italy. He was awarded a PhD in medical biotechnology from the same university. Professor of periodontology at the University of Bologna, Italy. Head of the Department of Periodontology and Dental Hygiene at the University of Bologna, Italy. Author of the book Mucogingival Esthetic Surgery, published by Quintessence Publishing and translated into 12 languages. Speaker at major Italian and international conferences on the topics of periodontics and implantology.
